The Gordon Engineering Leadership Program sponsors a series of seminars throughout the academic year that bring leaders in advanced technology to the Northeastern University campus. These established industry members speak with the Gordon Fellow Candidates on state of the art, successful product development and methods of leadership. SPEAKER: Bernard Gordon
TITLE: "Engineering Success: One Man's View"

Dr. Bernard M. Gordon is considered the "father of analog to digital conversion" for his inventions and contributions to signal translation, medical tomography and other high-precision instrumentation. He founded Analogic Corporation and prior to Analogic, he was the President and co-founder of Epsco, Incorporated. He is a recipient of the National Medal of Technology from President Reagan and is a member of the National Academy of Engineering. In 2006 he and his wife Sophia gave a multi-million naming gift to NU to support the Center for Subsurface Sensing and Imaging Systems and establish an innovative model for educating engineering leaders, the Gordon Engineering Leadership Program.

SPEAKER: Joseph Callerame
TITLE: “Engineering Leadership"

Joseph Callerame, Ph.D., Vice President, Science and Technology, develops new technologies and enhances product offerings to fulfill present and future market needs in AS&E's rapidly evolving industry. Dr. Callerame joined AS&E in 1998.

Prior to AS&E, Dr. Callerame served at Raytheon Electronic Systems as Manager of Engineering and Technology Development. From 1993 to 1994 he served as Deputy General Manager of the Research Division of Raytheon, and from 1989 to 1992 he was Assistant General Manager of this Division. Prior to serving as Assistant General Manager, Dr. Callerame held the position of Manager, Infrared Detector Laboratory and the Stable Sources Laboratory. From 1977 to 1980, Dr. Callerame was a senior scientist in Medical Ultrasound at Raytheon's Research Division. Dr. Callerame earned his Ph.D. and master's degree in physics from Harvard University, and holds a bachelor's degree in chemical physics from Columbia University. Dr. Callerame also served as a Postdoctoral Fellow in physics at MIT from 1975 to 1977.

SPEAKER: Sorin Marcovici
TITLE: "Engineering Leadership - a Way of Life"

Sorin Marcovici is the Corporate Senior Technical Vice President of Analogic. He holds a Physicist Engineer Degree from Polytechnic Institute Bucharest, Romania and a Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering from Northeastern University. During his 30 years with Analogic, Sorin has held various engineering positions of continuously increased responsibility and was General Manager of several operating Divisions. Most recently he was the President of Anrad Corporation, the Canadian wholly-owned subsidiary of Analogic. Sorin is a Member of SPIE, a Senior Member of IEEE and has 6 patents.

SPEAKER: Mark Russell
TITLE: "Technology Development"

Mark E. Russell is Vice President of engineering for Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems (IDS). During this talk he will share his experiences as a technical leader in the development of advanced technology. It will include a discussion of his career path and how it led to his current position. He will also talk about some of his lessons learned.

SPEAKER: Emel Bulat
TITLE: "Networking is the key to Success"

Emel Bulat is Director of Emerging Technology at Textron Systems Corporation (TSC), one of only 6 women at or above the Director level in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics fields at TSC. She directs the scouting activities for state-of-the-art technologies that fill capabilities gaps defined by various business lines during the strategic planning process. She is involved with the National Science Foundation, and actively supports initiatives to increase the numbers of females in the engineering workforce. Ms. Bulat previously worked in the telecommunications and semiconductor industries. She holds BS, MS in Chemistry & an MBA, has 9 US patents and co-authored 15 technical and 2 business journal papers.

SPEAKER: Michael Bunis
TITLE: "Intellectual Property: Legal Overview and Best Practices"

Michael Bunis is a Principal in Fish & Richardson's Boston Office. Mr. Bunis is a litigator practicing before the state and federal courts throughout the country. He counsels operating companies and private equity firms on all aspects of intellectual property—from litigation of disputes and the negotiation of complex licensing agreements to the acquisition of intangible assets.

SPEAKER: David Schafer, Technical Vice President, Analogic Corporation
TITLE: “A brief History of Aviation Security from the Perspective of a Physicist turned Engineer”

David Schafer is a Vice President at Analogic Corporation with system level responsibility for all explosives detection technology. He holds a Bachelor’s in Physics and Math from Bowdoin College, a Master’s Degree in Physics and a Ph.D. in Physics from Rice University. Dr. Schafer has 20 years of experience in X-ray technology, focused on explosive detection and security.
