- December 10-11, 2002 - Research and Industrial Collaboration
Conference (RICC)
- Northeastern University, Boston, MA
- The third annual RICC consisted of lectures and workshops
relating to CenSSIS' role in the field of sensing and imaging. It served
as an excellent opportunity to learn about research progress and direction,
education highlights, and industrial liaison/technology transfer that
that had occured over the past year in the CenSSIS research community.
Participants were able to meet with students, researchers and industry
participants. Subsurface sensing and imaging "problem seminars" on medical-biological
imaging and civil-environmental imaging were offered on the second day
of the conference.

- November 2-4, 2002- NSF ERC Annual Meeting
- Washington, DC
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) Engineering Research
Center (ERC) Annual Meeting is an opportunity for senior ERC staff to
converse with their counterparts from other ERCs. The meeting consists
of seminars and discussion focused on issues relevant to the operation
of an ERC.

- August 13, 2002 - Multi-Spectral Polarized Light
Imaging for Demarcation of Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer Margins
- Wellman Laboratories, Massachusetts General Hospital,
Boston, MA
- More than a million new cases of non-melanoma skin
cancers are diagnosed every year, therefore it is important to devleop
methods that will improve treatments of these tumors. Massachussetts
General Hospital has developed a multi-spectral imaging technique that
can rapidly image large surfaces of tumor affected fresh tissue. Polarized
light images provide valuable information about the superficial layers
of tissue and enable cancer localization even without staining. The
contrast of the tumor in the image can be further enhanced by topical
application of aqueous solutions of pheonthiazinium dyes. The results
of the experiments with freshly excised human tumor tissue indicate
that sufficient contrast can be achieved for reliable and quick differentiation
between tumor and surrounding tissue. The suggested technique is a
promising approach for accurate localization of tumor boundaries that
may facilitate tumor margin detection process, and allow tumor excision
without processing of frozen sections.

- August 8, 2002 - Research Experiences for Teachers
(RET) Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI) Field Trip
- Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, Woods Hole,
MA
- The Center for the Enhancement of Science and Mathematics
Education (CESAME) coordinated a field trip to WHOI for teachers who
participated in the RET program at Northeastern University in 2002.
Participants received a tour of the WHOI Deep Submergence Lab, and a
harbor tour. For more information on WHOI, visit their website at
http://www.whoi.edu/ .
- July 25, 2002 - Research Experiences for Teachers
(RET) Massachusetts General Hospital(MGH) Field Trip
- Boston, MA
- The Center for the Enhancement of Science and Mathematics
Education (CESAME) coordinated a trip for individuals who participated
in the Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) program at Northeastern
University in 2002. The teachers learned about proton-treatment cures
for cancer that are being developed at MGH. Dr. George Chen led the
discussion, explaining the pros and cons of the method, in which it
is possible to stop the proton beam once it hits the tumor, thus damaging
less of the surrounding tissue. For more information, visit the MGH
website at
