  Gordon Scholars – The Undergraduate Pipeline

The Gordon Scholars Program has been offering undergraduate engineering students the opportunity to participate in research experiences under the guidance of a faculty members since the Fall of 2002.

The Gordon Scholars Program offers freshmen engineering students the opportunity to become involved in research and K-12 activity related to the Gordon-CenSSIS Engineering Research Center and the ALERT Research Center, in addition to other research and K-12 programs on campus. Gordon Scholars will attend research presentations, engage in discussion with upper-class Gordon Scholar Mentors, participate in research experiences under the guidance of a faculty member and learn about interesting outreach opportunities. We believe that the Gordon Scholars Program helps engineering undergraduates to consider the many paths open to them as potential researchers, educators and engineering leaders. Participation in the Gordon Scholars Program, coupled with co-op and other experiential learning options, will position the Gordon Scholars well to bring engineering solutions to the global marketplace.

NU engineering freshman are encouraged to apply to the program and Gordon Scholars are selected in the fall.

As a Gordon Scholar you will:

  • Receive a $500 school bookstore voucher

  • Take the High Tech Tools & Toys course for first year students

  • Be eligible to participate in Gordon-CenSSIS research

  • Participate in Educational Outreach Activities in Boston-area middle schools or high schools.

Gordon Scholar Mentor Program

An integral part of the Gordon Scholars program are the Gordon Mentors. Past Gordon Scholars may apply to be a Gordon Mentor, to provide support and guidance to one or more Gordon Scholars during the 2012-2013 program.

The Gordon Mentor application due date for the Spring 2013 semester has passed.

During 2012/2013 Academic year, 22 Freshmen were selected as Gordon Scholars and will participate in the following:

  • Specific Gordon-CenSSIS meetings on research and K-12 involvement.

  • A special “High Tech Tools and Toys Laboratory” section of the “GE U111: Engineering Problem Solving and Computation” course;
  • Worked a minimum of 20 hours on either a research project under the direction of NU engineering faculty or K-12 outreach activities through collaboration with the Center for STEM Education at Northeastern University.

During the summer of 2012, several Gordon Scholars participated in the Gordon-CenSSIS Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program: ALERT REU Program and BIOSENSE REU Program

Gordon-CenSSIS activities are designed to be interesting and accessible to all Gordon-CenSSIS students, including first-year undergraduates.
